Kobbie Boateng Mainoo (born 19 April 2005) is an English professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Premier League club Manchester United.
Kobbie Mainoo is a highly gifted technical player with a mesmerising passing ability, strength and stamina on & off the ball. The midfielder can also step in and break up opposition play in the middle of the park when his side do not possses the ball.
Kobbie Mainoo imposing physicality and ability has often seen him compared to French midfielder Paul Pogba although it is worthy to note that Kobbie tends to take a more simpler style of play and approach to his game.
Early life and career
Born in Stockport, Mainoo started his youth career at Cheadle & Gatley Junior Football Club, before joining Manchester United at the age of nine.
Manchester United Youth team
He started his football career at the tender age of five before joining Manchester United’s U-15 side. Kobbie Mainoo started his career playing as a striker before switching positions as he dropped into central midfield although he could also easily operate in the attacking midfield position.
Kobbie Mainoo’s talent made him a standout player amongst the U-15’s and he was quickly promoted to United’s U-18 side at the age of 15 where he became a vital player alongside the likes Alejandro Garnacho and Charlie McNeil. He played a key role in Manchester United’s 2021/2022 FA Youth cup triumph for the U18 side as he was a main stay in midfield for Travis Binnion team with the 17 year old scoring twice in his side’s run to the title.
Such form has also seen him made a handful of appearances for the U-23 side while he has also featured in the Uefa Youth league for the club although he is yet to be included in a matchday squad for the senior team. On the 17th of May 2022, it was announced that Kobbie Mainoo had signed his first professional contract with Manchester United although the length of the deal was not revealed.
Senior team
Mainoo signed his first professional contract in May 2022. His performances, including a good midfield display against Carlisle United in the EFL Trophy, earned him a callup to the senior squad for training in October 2022. He was named on the bench for the first time on 16 October, ahead of a Premier League match against Newcastle United.
Mainoo made his competitive debut for United on 10 January 2023, starting in a 3–0 EFL Cup win over Charlton Athletic, and made his league debut on 19 February by coming on as a substitute in a 3–0 win against Leicester City.
International career
Mainoo has represented England at under-17, under-18 and under-19 levels. He is also eligible to represent Ghana.
