Who is Eduardo Camavinga?

Eduardo Celmi Camavinga (born 10 November 2002) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for La Liga club Real Madrid and the France national team.

Camavinga was born in a refugee camp in Cabinda, Angola in 2002, to Congolese parents. He has five siblings. His family moved to France when he was 2. They moved to Fougères, where he grew up. He practiced judo for a time, before giving it up to focus solely on football. In 2013, the Camavingas’ house was burnt down, destroying most of the family’s property; Eduardo has claimed that this was a source of motivation that pushed him to pursue a career in football.

On 7 July 2020, he obtained the Baccalauréat ES (Economic and Social) without mention.

Family Life

Camavinga is no stranger to adversity and he’s grateful for the opportunity available to him due to the sacrifices made by his parents. He was born in an Angolan refugee camp because they were fleeing conflict in Kinshasa and they had their house burned down in 2013, causing them to lose most of their property.

“They didn’t necessarily talk to us about problems on a daily basis,” Camavinga said. “But as I grew up we talked about their struggles. But me, on a daily basis, I didn’t necessarily see it. But thinking back about it, I realise that we did struggle.

“The fact that all that happened in my life, I think it is a positive thing. Because I know that we went through a lot, I will always be respectful to my parents. Always. Because it’s thanks to them that I am like this today.

“I hope I’ll be remembered as a person who does not give up, who is always there. A good person, someone who won a lot of trophies. A very good footballer, a footballer who played with love for the shirt, and who scored a lot of goals and got many assists.”

One reason for that is that he’s made a dream come true by signing for Los Blancos, and the second is that he’s been joined by his family. Beyond his natural talent, his entourage are one of the secrets behind his success.

Eduardo Camavinga and his family

On the day of his presentation as a Real Madrid player, he was surrounded by his parents and four siblings, who haven’t left his side since. They are his main support since he moved to Spain, and on Tuesday they completed their move into a new home next door to Camavinga.

The family have been through difficult times, including having to leave the Democratic Republic of Congo and seeing their home burnt to the ground. Camavinga’s father said that his son would be the family’s saviour, a prediction which has come true with the footballer playing at one of the world’s biggest clubs.

The Camavinga family are now in Madrid and he is a happy man, showing his enjoyment of his first weeks at the club with how he trains and reacts to fans.

The midfielder has always wanted to repay his parents and family for all that they did for him, as it was his mother who encouraged him to be a footballer and his father who supported him. Camavinga is happy and you can tell, just like Carlo Ancelotti can after seeing him register a goal and an assist already.

The midfield maestro has four siblings, but only two are nominally identifiable. They include his older brother Sebastio and younger brother Celio. Eduardo Camavinga has two sisters and two brothers. Their parents gave birth to a total of five children.
