Mason Will John Greenwood (born 1 October 2001) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Premier League club Manchester United and the England national team.

Coming through the youth system, Greenwood made his first start for United in a UEFA Europa League match against Astana in September 2019, in which he scored becoming the club’s youngest ever goalscorer in European competition at the age of 17 years, 353 days. His senior international debut for England came in September 2020, in a UEFA Nations League game against Iceland.

In January 2022, Greenwood was arrested for suspicion of raping and assaulting his girlfriend, for which United responded by suspending him “until further notice”.

Greenwood was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England and raised in the Wibsey area of the city. He is of Jamaican descent. His family have a background in sports; his sister, Ashton, is a track athlete.

On 30 January 2022, Greenwood was accused of assault against his girlfriend, in a series of posts on her Instagram account, which included recorded audio clips and images. Later that day, Greenwood was arrested at his home by Greater Manchester Police on suspicion of rape and assault.

Girlfriend and Rape Case

Mason Greenwood has been accused of assault by a woman in several shocking posts of serious injuries that she claims she has suffered at the hands of the Manchester United star.

A number of pictures were uploaded along with a video and a voice note to the woman’s Instagram story, including one of her lip badly bleeding and several bruises to her face, body and thighs.

With blood flowing from her mouth in one video, a caption read: “To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me.”

An audio file was also uploaded to her story that detailed a graphic scene involving a female voice in communication with a male voice.

The posts have since been deleted from the Instagram account.

United made the following statement in light of the posts: “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media. We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established. Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

The club followed that up by announcing they had suspended Greenwood.

“Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice,” their statement read.

Greater Manchester Police issued a statement to Mirror Football which did not confirm any names, but said they were looking into the matter.

The statement read: “Greater Manchester Police is aware of images and videos circulating on social media. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

GMP have since confirmed they have arrested Greenwood on suspicion of rape and assault.

A statement read: “Greater Manchester Police were made aware earlier today (Sunday 30 January) of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

“An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Sportswear giants Nike, who sponsor the player, also released a statement to The Athletic, which read: “We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.”

On his first call-up to the national squad, the striker sneaked in two Icelandic models in the team hotel along with Phil Foden despite strict instructions to quarantine.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate ended up sending the United ace home, along with Foden.

Greenwood is an up and coming star for United, where he has won over the approval of club legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who regarded him as one of the best young players in the world.

He said: “He’s got the coolness and the coldness of a great striker.

“He never panics, his shots are always low, he’s always inside the posts. He’s shown great qualities.”

The 20-year-old has made 24 appearances for the Red Devils this season, scoring six times and has a contract until 2024, with an option to extend by another year.

The forward has played one time for England – coming on as a sub against Iceland two days before his team hotel debacle.

He has not played for the Three Lions since though Southgate did say: “He is in our thoughts, I’ve spoken with him and his club, he is a player we really like.”

Greenwood has been warned at United for a number of breaches of discipline during his short time in the first-team squad.

And rumours arose this season of a rift with Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined from Juventus last summer in a surprise reunion with the Old Trafford outfit.

Reports emerged that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had clashed with Greenwood over his reluctance to pass while the two are looking to play in the same position.

Arrest and more

Greenwood & Ms Robson separated after it emerged Greenwood had a tryst with an Icelandic model that saw him kicked out of the England football squad in 2020.

But they reunited eight months later in November that year and shared videos of them larking around at home.

Greenwood and Harriet are from Wisbey, near Bradford and have known each other since their school days at Ashton on Mersey School in Greater Manchester.
