The Zone of Interest is a 2023 period drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis. A co-production between the United States, the United Kingdom, and Poland, the film centers on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife as they strive to build a dream life next to the camp. It stars Sandra Hüller and Christian Friedel in the lead roles.
The Zone of Interest premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 19 May 2023 to critical acclaim, winning the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize. It is set to be released in the United States on 8 December 2023 by A24.
Premise
The commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.

Production
Development
After his previous film Under the Skin, Glazer dedicated two years to reading extensively. During his visit to Auschwitz, he was affected by the residence of the commandant Rudolf Höss. Glazer collaborated with the Auschwitz Museum and other organisations, and obtained special permission to access the archives, where he examined testimonies provided by survivors and individuals who had been employed in the Höss household. By piecing together these testimonies, Glazer gradually constructed a detailed portrayal of the individuals connected to the events. Unlike the book it was inspired by, Glazer used the real people involved in the events rather than using fictional names to emphasise authenticity.
The cinematography used cameras embedded around the set, keeping the crew away, and allowing the actors to improvise during filming. Violence is depicted as occurring off screen without being overtly shown, creating a film that avoids graphic violence and “feels less exploitative” than other Holocaust films
Glazer confirmed development of the project in 2019, with A24, Film4 Productions, Access Entertainment and House Productions co-financing and producing.
Filming
Principal photography began in Auschwitz in the summer of 2021, and continued in Jelenia Góra in January 2022. The entire film was shot in Poland and Germany.
Release
The Zone of Interest was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on 19 May 2023, and received a six-minute standing ovation. A North American premiere occurred September 1, 2023, at the 50th Telluride Film Festival. It will also screen at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. It will also screen at the 2023 New York Film Festival. It is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 8, 2023, and on February 9, 2024, in Polish theaters.
