Musa Appreciate Makamu (born 9 May 1990) professionally known as Musa Keys, is a South African record producer born in Giyani and raised in Flora Park, Polokwane. Makamu is known for his 2021 single “Vula Mlomo” which was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).

In 2023 the record producer took home a Metro FM Music Award for Best Styled Artist where he was nominated alongside the likes of Mafikizolo, Sjava, Daliwonga and Sino Msolo.

In November 2023, Musa Keys was nominated for Grammy Awards for his contribution in Unavailable ft Nigerian artist Davido.

Early life and career

Musa Keys was born on 9th May 1990 in Giyani and raised in Polokwane. He is South African.

He is of Zulu descent. Musa Keys began his music career early and learned to play several instruments, including the piano and drums.

He began making music at the tender age of 13 when he played the keyboard at church.

Drawn to the lush melodies and softly rhythmic synthesizers, Musa Keys soon became enamoured with producing music himself.

Musa Keys went to Damelin to study sound engineering but withdrew in his second year, claiming he had already taught himself all he needed to know.

His single mother raised him as his father was absent. He revealed that his mother was not present most of the time due to work, and his uncle, who was supposed to look after him, also happened to be absent.

As a result, he grew up in church, which helped strengthen his spirituality and make better decisions in his life. During his time in church, he was an altar boy and usher and played the piano. Back then, he never thought of becoming a musician and dreamed of becoming an architect or engineer. Instead, he found himself as a student at Damelin pursuing Sound Engineering but dropped out during his second year to pursue his music.

Career

In 2013, Musa Keys uploaded his first track onto SoundCloud, and the rest is history.

With millions of streams on his tracks and collaborations with some of South Africa’s most beloved artists, Musa Keys quickly became one of the country’s most popular Amapiano artists.

Musa Keys in November 2023 was nominated for the Grammy Awards together with Davido for their song Unavailable.
