Leo (also marketed as Leo: Bloody Sweet) is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by S. S. Lalit Kumar and Jagadish Palanisamy. It stars Vijay in the titular role, alongside Trisha, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun, Madonna Sebastian, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin, Mansoor Ali Khan, George Maryan, Priya Anand and Mathew Thomas.

It is the third installment in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe, following the events of Kaithi (2019) and Vikram (2022) and is inspired by A History of Violence (2005), which itself was adapted from the graphic novel of the same name.

The film was officially announced in January 2023 under the tentative title Thalapathy 67, as it is Vijay’s 67th film as a lead actor, and the title of the film was announced a few days later. Principal photography commenced the same month in Chennai along with a sporadic schedule in Kashmir, which was again followed by another schedule held at the former location, and wrapped by mid-July. The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography handled by Manoj Paramahamsa and editing by Philomin Raj.

Leo was released worldwide on 19 October 2023 in standard and IMAX formats to mixed reviews from critics.

Plot

Parthiban “Parthi” is an animal rescuer and a cafè owner in Theog, living happily with his wife Sathya and two children Siddharth “Siddhu” and Mathi “Chintu”. One day, Parthi’s friend Joshy Andrews, a forest ranger, calls him to help tame a spotted hyena on the loose. With Siddhu’s help, Parthi manages to tranquilize the hyena and save the townsfolk. He purposefully avoids public attention over this incident and adopts the hyena after it calms down.

One night, Parthi and Mathi are at the cafe when a dangerous gangster Shanmugham arrives with his gang to steal money from the cafe. Parthi tries to appease them by giving the money, but one of the gang members makes a move on a female employee. Enraged, Parthi beats up all of the gang members. When one of them tries to kill Mathi, Parthi guns all of them down without hesitation, but later has an emotional breakdown. Initially arrested, Parthi is released for having committed the murders in self-defense, but his photo appears in newspapers all over India. One such image is seen by a notorious gangster Harold Das in Telangana, who informs his brother Antony Das about him. Antony immediately leaves for Theog to meet him.

Meanwhile, Shanmugham’s relatives attempt to kill Parthi and his family and Parthi requests a high-ranking, armed police officer from Tamil Nadu to be sent to his house for protection. Parthi’s request is granted as Napoleon, recently promoted following his heroics with Dilli, is assigned to protect his family. On meeting Parthi, Anthony insists that Parthi is his son Leo Das, who was assumed to be dead in a fire accident, but Parthi vehemently denies being Leo. Antony threatens him to accept his identity and surrender or face the consequences. Parthi meets Sathya and tells her that Leo is a mass murderer, prompting her to dig into Parthi’s past. At the same time, Joshy starts digging into Leo’s past and finds out about his friend Irudhayaraj D’Souza, who was arrested and sentenced to be hanged in three days. On meeting with Irudhayaraj, Joshy learns about Leo’s past.

In 1999, Antony established a tobacco factory called Das & Co. Harold returned from London and started smuggling drugs as their tobacco products did not take off. Antony’s twin children Leo and Elisa Das did the dirty work for them to run the business smoothly. Antony, being a strong believer in the occult, tried to sacrifice Elisa based on his astrologer’s advice, as this would allow their tobacco products to take off. Enraged, Leo set fire to all of Harold’s drugs, but Harold managed to kill Elisa and Antony shot Leo, who is presumed to be dead. On hearing this, Joshy is convinced that Parthi is not Leo, while Sathya also gets definitive proof of the same.

Meanwhile, Antony kidnaps Siddhu and tells him that he will sacrifice Siddhu as he could not sacrifice Elisa. Parthi and Napoleon give chase, with Parthi eventually catching up with them and finishing off Antony and his men, but does not find Siddhu. Harold learns about Antony’s death and calls Parthi to bring Antony’s body in return for Siddhu. As Parthi goes to Harold’s lair, Harold reveals that he has sent men to kill Sathya and Mathi. However, Napoleon, Joshy and the hyena finish off all the men. Harold’s men attack Parthi, who manages to fend them off. As Harold and Parthi engage in a fistfight, Parthi grabs a gun and holds Harold at gunpoint, at which point Harold admits that Parthi is not Leo and tells that he and his family can walk away freely.

However, Parthi starts laughing and finally admits that he is Leo before gunning down Harold and blasting the entire Das & Co. factory. Leo states that he has done nothing good in his past and anyone who knows his history must not remain alive. Parthi returns back to his peaceful life and soon gets a phone call. The caller reveals that he knows Parthi is Leo and tells him that destroying the Das factory is not enough as drugs are rampant all over India. The caller also tells that he knows Parthi recognizes his identity and Parthi sighs in exasperation.

Release

Theatrical

Leo was theatrically released on 19 October 2023 in standard, IMAX and other premium formats. Apart from Tamil, it was released in dubbed versions including the Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi languages. A lightly edited version of the film was theatrically released in the UK with a 15+ rating. However, an uncut 18 rated version was also approved for a 26 October release in the UK. Leo was the first film of Vijay to be released in the IMAX format in the UK. It was the first Tamil film to release in Bangladesh on the same day as its worldwide release, just like in other major countries. Leo was the first Tamil film to be released in over 999 locations in North America and premiered on 18 October 2023.

Distribution

Sree Gokulam Movies acquired the distribution rights of the film in Kerala for ₹15 crore (US$1.9 million). Sithara Entertainments brought the distribution rights for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and Swagath Enterprise did so for Karnataka. Phars Films acquired the overseas distribution rights and will release the film themselves in the Middle East. Ahimsa Entertainment acquired the distribution rights for the UK and 4 Seasons Creations for the rest of Europe, Prathyangira Cinemas and AA Creations for North America, Home Screen Entertainment for Singapore, Malik Streams for Malaysia, and Cyber Systems Australia for Australia and New Zealand.

Pre-bookings

Pre-bookings started in the UK on 7 September 2023, six weeks before the release. Over 10,000 tickets were sold on the first day of pre-bookings with a collection of £100,000 (US$136,986.3). Pre-bookings started in the United States and Canada and in Germany on 27 September 2023, three weeks before the release. After the trailer was released, the premiere bookings for the film in the US crossed over US$500K. 32,500 tickets were sold for the film’s premiere in the UK for ₹2.5 crore (US$310,000), thus becoming the highest Day 1 collection in the UK for a Tamil film. Day 1 bookings in the UK crossed £320,000 (US$438,356.16) before 13 days for the release becoming the highest Day 1 collection in the UK for a Indian film surpassing Pathaan. Pre-bookings started in Singapore on 12 September 2023, a week before the release and over 15,000 tickets were sold on the first day. Leo pre-bookings in the US crossed US$900K with over 40,700 tickets sold before a week for the release.

Pre-release business

According to Indian trade sources, Leo is set to become the first Tamil film to achieve a pre-release recovery of ₹422 crore (US$53 million) with the sale of satellite, digital, music, and theatrical rights, out of which, ₹246 crore (US$31 million) has been earned from the film’s non-theatrical rights. The overseas theatrical rights were sold to Phars Films for ₹60 crore (US$7.5 million).

The digital streaming rights were acquired by Netflix and the satellite rights by Sun TV.
