Jigarthanda DoubleX (also known as Jigarthanda 2) is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language action comedy film directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Kaarthekeyen Santhanam, S. Kathiresan and Alankar Pandian under Stone Bench Films, Five Star Creations and Invenio Origin. The film is a spiritual successor and prequel to Jigarthanda (2014) and stars Raghava Lawrence and S. J. Suryah. Set in the 1970s, it revolves around a filmmaker and a gangster collaborating to make a Western film.

The film was officially announced in August 2022. Principal photography began that December and wrapped in July 2023. The film has music composed by Santhosh Narayanan, cinematography handled by Tirru and editing by Shafique Mohamed Ali.

Jigarthanda DoubleX was released on 10 November 2023, the week of Diwali, and received positive reviews from critics.

Plot

During the year 1975, DSP Rathna Kumar is camped at Kombai village forest to nab a notorious elephant poacher named Shettani. The cops torture local tribals to know about Shettani’s whereabouts even though they themselves are Shettani’s victims.

Meanwhile, Rathna’s elder brother Jeyakodi is a rising politician of ruling party and a film star who is distressed that his films are halted from screening in Southern Tamilnadu. A notorious gangster named Alliyus Caeser in Madurai Who halts his flims from screening at Madurai who also happens to be a close aide of Karmegam – Jeyakodi’s fellow partymen who is challenging his ambitions to become CM. Jeyakodi asks Rathna to kill Alliyus and other 3 gangsters who are supporting Karmegam’s political ambitions so that he can make the latter less influential within the party. Kirubakaran is a cowardly man and a newly recruited SI who gets falsely accused and imprisoned for a murder of 4 students at a college.

Rathna Kumar selects Kirubakaran, along with 3 other ex-cop prisoners to send them as moles and assigns each of them a single target with Kirubakar’s target being Alliyus Caeser. Rathna promises that they will be acquitted and resumed to their duties if they succeed in their mission. Kirubakaran accepts the assignment as he wants to marry his love interest and get back his job. Alliyus advertises publicly in search for a film director who can make a Pan-Indian film with him as lead and make him as the first dark-complexioned Tamil cinema actor. Kirubakaran assumes the alias of Ray Dasan, a student and assistant director of Satyajit Ray, and offers to make an Oscar-winning film based on Alliyus’s life as a gangster titled Pandyaa after knowing that he is an ardent fan of Clint Eastwood.

Alliyus agrees to Ray’s plan and their attempt to make a film. Kirubakaran wants to make biopic of Allius and does live-shooting of his real life actions. Kirubakar learns that Allius belongs to the same tribe that is hunted by Shettani. It is shown that Alliyus left the village as a young boy with his father due to a tragic incident and becomes a gangster as he lost the faith in being good and empathetic. Alliyus invites other 3 gangsters and Karmegam for the baby showering event. One of the targets in hitlist gets successfully killed by one of the moles. This raises suspicion and Alliyus finds about the moles and kills them, but Kirubakaran is saved. Kirubakaran also learns that Alliyus ordered the hit on those 4 college students, for which he was made as a scapegoat. This revelation hardens his determination to exact vengeance against Alliyus.

Kirubakaran wants Alliyus to be killed by Shettani, where he asks him to visit his ancestral village and nab Shettani with the pretext that his adventure against Shettani will be shot as second half of his biopic. Allius unwittingly agrees and visits the village and makes a deal with Rathna that he would nab Shettani in exchange of releasing the tribal members, to which the latter agrees. The villagers reveal about the importance of elephants in their culture and how they are slowly vanishing from the forests due to the notorious poachers. Alliyus and the local tribals fight and kill the raiding gang of Shettani and able to catch few members. The members reveal the whereabouts of Shettani. Allius confronts Shettani, when the latter was hunting elephants and almost gets killed.

Kirubakaran goes through a change of heart and saves Alliyus as he takes his body to village at right time for treatment. Upon recuperance, Alliyus fights Shettani again and hands him over to the police in presence of incumbent CM, who visits upon his insistence that Shettani will be handed only if CM visits. The villagers celebrate once the inmates are released with rituals and Kirubakaran marries a local tribal woman, Paingili. As the village celebrate the long awaited peace, Alliyus and Kirubakaran are shocked to see Shettani back in forest hunting elephants. Shettani reveals that it is the CM-led government that has nurtured him over years so that he can smuggle Ivory on behalf of two business tycoons who promised CM that they would provide her the post of prime minister through lobbying.

Shettani also reveals that the authorities have planned to label Alliyus as the real “Shettani” and eventually wipe out the entire tribe in a police operation. The tribal members agree to lay their lives peacefully for greater cause and confront the police firing, which kills all of them including Alliyus. Kirubakaran, who shoots the entire footage of massacre, tries to escape with his wife, but both gets shot in the firing. Jeyakodi is touted to be the next CM candidate. Karmegam, who manages to secure video tapes of entire film shot by Kirubakaran from the crime scene, plays it in a theatre packed with audience where Jeyakodi’s film was supposed to play. The audience learns about Alliyus’ life and also the government led massacre of tribals. As a final resort, the helpless CM sends Rathna and his men to kill Karmegam in the theater. However, Rathna gets shocked after seeing Kirubakaran, who is still alive. Kirubakaran kills Rathna, while Karmegam and his aides eliminate his men.Kiruba returns home to be with Paingili and Ceasar’s child who he names “Sethu”.

In a post-credits scene,a mysterious man is shown stalking Paingili and Sethu.He mentions to another man sitting in a car that they will eliminate the last remaining members of Ceaser’s family teasing a sequel.

Release

The film was released on 10 November 2023, along with dubbed versions in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages.

Red Giant Movies holds the film’s domestic distribution rights, while Ahimsa Entertainment holds the overseas distribution rights.
