Gangubai Kathiawadi is an upcoming Indian Hindi 2022 biographical crime drama film produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Jayantilal Gada and directed by Bhansali. It is adapted from a chapter of Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai about Ganga Harjivandas, a simple girl of Kathiawad who had no choice but to embrace ways of destiny and swing it in her favour; the film shows how in no time she marks her own territory and turns Gangubai, a madame in the red light area of Kamathipura. It stars Alia Bhatt in the lead titular role of Gangubai.
The film also features Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Indira Tiwari and Varun Kapoor in supporting roles. Ajay Devgn, Huma Qureshi and Emraan Hashmi have special cameos. It marks the film debut for Maheshwari and Kapoor.
Initially planned for global theatrical release on 11 September 2020, Gangubai Kathiawadi has since then been deferred multiple times due to COVID-19 pandemic in India. The film will now finally have world premiere at 72nd Berlin International Film Festival to be held from 10 to 20 February 2022, and release theatrically on 18 February 2022 in Hindi and dubbed Telugu versions simultaneously.
The film is about the life of Gangubai Kothewali, a young girl sold into prostitution by her suitor Ramnik Lal, and how she becomes the madam of a brothel in Kamathipura.
