Sonia Chinonso Ekweremadu (born 2001) is the daughter of Ike Ekweremadu and Newanneka Ekweremadu. She is the last daughter in the Ekweremadu’s family of four children.
Sonia Ekweremadu is of Igbo origin as her parents both comes from the Southeastern part of Nigeria.
Her father, Ike Ekweremadu who was born on 12 May 1962 is a Nigerian politician and lawyer from Enugu State who has served in the Senate of Nigeria since May 2003. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party, and was the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate for three consecutive (6th, 7th and 8th) senate.
Sonia Ekweremadu has four siblings who are her two brothers and her only sister Sylvia Ekweremadu.
Sonia’s parents are Ike Ekweremadu (father) and Nwanneka Ekwermadu (mother).
Ike Ekweremadu, 60, and his wife Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55, appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in west London earlier on Thursday.
The 15-year-old alleged victim has been taken into care. The Met Police said agencies were working to support him.
The court heard that Mr Ekweremadu, who is both a politician and a barrister, was deputy president of the Senate.
‘Attorney General’s consent required’
The defendants live in Nigeria but have family in London, magistrates were told. Both are accused of conspiracy to arrange and/or facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation.
The pair were asked by the clerk for their address, to which they both replied: “Nigeria”.
The court heard the prosecution needed permission to proceed because of jurisdiction issues.
Prosecutor Damla Ayas told the court: “In respect of these offences the (UK) Attorney General’s consent is required and the Crown require 14 days for that to be obtained.”
Most of the alleged offences took place in the UK, magistrates heard. The Ekweremadus, who were arrested two days ago, have been remanded in custody to appear at the same court on 7 July.
Specialist crime team
Mr Ekweremadu, who was recently made a visiting professor at the University of Lincoln, served three terms as deputy president of the Senate, from 2007 to 2019.
A member of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he has been a senator since 2003.
An investigation by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Team took place after detectives were alerted to potential modern-day slavery offences.
Organ-harvesting involves removing parts of the body, often for commercial gain and against the will of the victim.
A University of Lincoln spokesman said: “Visiting professors are often, as is in this case, non-resident at the university, unpaid and advisory.
“We are deeply concerned about the nature of these allegations but as this is an active police investigation, we cannot comment further at this stage.”

Senator Ike Ekweremadu notified the UK authorities that he was transporting the individual abroad for a kidney transplant for his daughter in a letter that was submitted with the visa application of an alleged homeless child.
According to a document obtained by some news media, Mr. Ekweremadu sought for David Ukpo’s visa on December 28, 2021.
“I am writing in support of Mr. Ukpo Nwamini David’s visa application as he undergoes medical testing in preparation for donating a kidney to Ms. Sonia Ekweremadu.
I’ll be covering the costs while David and Sonia are in the Royal Free Hospital in London. A statement of my bank account is provided, the letter stated.
“Ike and Beatrice Ekweremadu are both in court today facing accusations of conspiring to sell people for the purpose of harvesting their organs.
“The alleged victim in this case is a homeless 15-year-old kid who was taken off the streets of Lagos, Nigeria, by Mr. and Mrs. Ekweremadu and brought to the United Kingdom.
“Bail was declined for Ekweremadus. sent back to detention. To be continued on July 7.”
Sonia Ekweremadu is currently single and not in any public relationship for now.
