Joshua T. Bassett (born 22 December 2000) is an American actor and singer. He is known for his starring role as Ricky Bowen in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.
Early Life and Career
Bassett was born and raised in Oceanside, California, United States, to parents Taylor and Laura, and he has five sisters. He was home-schooled.
His first introduction to musical theater was at age 7, over a decade before he starred as Ricky in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, when he was in a community theater production of High School Musical as J.V. Jock No. 2. Since then, he has starred in over 30 musical productions.
Bassett’s first substantial role was in 2018, when he played the recurring role of Aidan Peters on the Disney Channel television series Stuck in the Middle. Bassett was cast in his first starring role at age 17 as Ricky Bowen, the male lead, in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. According to Playbill, Bassett co-wrote “Just for a Moment” with co-star Olivia Rodrigo for the series’ soundtrack.
In early 2020, Bassett signed with talent and entertainment company United Talent Agency, as well as signed a recording contract with Warner Records. He released his first single, “Common Sense”, on music platforms on April 3, 2020. His second single, “Anyone Else”, was released on July 16, 2020. Bassett released his self-titled debut EP on March 12, 2021, with the lead single, “Lie Lie Lie”, being released on January 14, 2021.
In late 2021, Bassett released a trio of songs, titled “Set Me Free”, “Crisis”, and “Secret”.
Girlfriend/ Wife and Personal Life
After High School Musical: The Musical: The Series premiered on Disney+ in November 2019, fans immediately fell in love with Joshua Bassett (who plays Ricky in the fan-favorite show). Prior to his Disney+ debut, the actor had a brief stint on the Disney Channel show Stuck in the Middle, but it wasn’t until fans heard his singing voice that they became smitten with the talented actor.
As Joshua’s fame grew, fans started to become interested in his love life, which led to romance rumors between him and his costar, Olivia Rodrigo. Although the pair never confirmed their rumored relationship, there were many times when they cozied up together during interviews and when Joshua admitted he improvised the “I love you” scene between their HSMTMTS characters, viewers were convinced they were more than friends.
“It is the most powerful feeling in the world when you don’t even have to think, and it just comes through you. It was really a magical moment,” he told the Los Angeles Times about that particular moment on set with Olivia. “Every single time, I would change it to something else that was specific to her and I, and getting her reaction out of it was the best thing in the world.”
It’s unclear exactly what went down between Olivia and Joshua parted ways, but the actor was spotted with Sabrina Carpenter in July 2020. Rumors about what went on between these three have been swirling since January 2021 when Olivia released her song “Drivers License.”
Then in May 2021, Joshua came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community during an interview. At the time, Joshua declared his admiration for Harry Styles and called him “hot,” following up with: “I guess this also my coming out video, I guess.”
“Don’t let anyone tell you love isn’t love,” he explained to GQ in June 2021. “They’re the ones who probably need it the most.”
Months later, during a separate interview with GQ in December 2021, Joshua gave an update on his relationship status. The actor declared that “at the moment” he’s not ready to be in love, noting that his dating life is “non-existent … I think that’s something that’s been good about this last little bit: I’m good on my own. I don’t need somebody else.”
Joshua continued, “Ultimately, being in a relationship is a responsibility. I don’t know if I’m ready for that. … I’ve only had three [relationships], despite what it seems.”
Joshua Bassett is currently not married.
Personal Life
Bassett sings and plays piano, guitar, ukulele, bass, and drums. On May 10, 2021, he came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community during an interview.
In January 2021, Bassett became seriously ill and was hospitalized with septic shock and heart failure: “[The doctors] told me that I had a 30% chance of survival. They told me that if I had not checked into the hospital within 12 hours, I would have been found [dead] in my apartment.”
In December 2021, Bassett disclosed that he experienced sexual abuse as a child and teen.
In a new interview with People, Bassett opened up about what led to his hospitalization, suggesting that stress from the overall reaction to “Driver’s License” contributed to his condition.
Net Worth
Joshua Bassett’s net worth as of 2022 is estimated at around $2 million – $10 million.
