Emma Raducanu (born 13 November 2002) is a British professional tennis player. She is the reigning US Open champion, has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 23 (achieved on 13 September 2021), and is the current British No. 1.

Ranked No. 338 in the world, she reached the fourth round on her major debut with a wildcard into the main draw for the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. This helped her to access the qualifying competition for the 2021 US Open in August and after qualifying for the main draw, she went on to become the first qualifier, male or female, to reach and win a major singles final. In the final she defeated 19-year-old Leylah Fernandez – winning the title without dropping a set throughout the tournament. Raducanu became the first British woman to win a major singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon 1977.

Early Life and Career

Emma Raducanu was born on 13 November 2002 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Ian and Renee, who originated from Bucharest, Romania, and Shenyang, Liaoning, China, respectively. The original spelling of her family name in Romanian is Răducanu. She attributed her mentality and ethics to her tennis idols Simona Halep and Li Na, both from countries of her ancestry. Both of her parents work in the finance sector. Her family moved to England when she was two years old. Raducanu started playing tennis at the age of five. She attended Newstead Wood School, a selective grammar school in the London Borough of Bromley, where she obtained an A* in mathematics and an A in economics in her A-Levels. As a child, she participated in various sports and activities, including golf, karting, motocross, tap dancing and ballet. She is a fan and follower of Formula One.

She holds both British and Canadian citizenship. She speaks Mandarin, watches Taiwanese television shows, and is a lover of Romanian cuisine, courtesy of her Bucharest-based grandmother.

2021: WTA Tour debut, US Open title, top 25

She made her WTA Tour main draw debut at the 2021 Nottingham Open, where she gained entry on a wildcard.

In June Raducanu made her main draw Grand Slam debut on a wildcard to the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. She advanced to the third round with initial victories over Vitalia Diatchenko and Markéta Vondroušová. She was the youngest British woman to reach the Wimbledon third round since Elena Baltacha in 2002, also as an 18-year-old. She then defeated Sorana Cîrstea to reach the fourth round, becoming, at 18 years and 239 days old, the youngest British woman to reach the last 16 in the Open Era, and guaranteeing a top-185 in WTA rankings, having been at world No. 338 at the start of Wimbledon. On 5 July 2021, Raducanu retired in the second set of her fourth-round match against Ajla Tomljanović, due to breathing difficulty.

Raducanu, with a ranking of No. 186, played at the Silicon Valley Classic, the first women’s tournament in the annual US Open Series, in August, entering on a wildcard to the tournament. She lost in the first round to Zhang Shuai. She changed her coach during this time from Nigel Sears, father-in-law of former world No. 1 Andy Murray, to Andrew Richardson, one of her youth coaches. In August 2021 Raducanu reached the final of the WTA 125 tournaments event in Chicago where she lost to Clara Tauson. The WTA ranking points she gained brought her to a new career high ranking of world No. 150.

At the US Open, Raducanu beat Bibiane Schoofs, Mariam Bolkvadze, and Mayar Sherif in straight sets in qualifying to enter the main draw. There she beat Stefanie Voegele, Zhang Shuai, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Shelby Rogers, Belinda Bencic and Maria Sakkari to reach the final, without dropping a set. She gained more than 100 ranking places, entering the top 25 and displacing Johanna Konta as the British women’s singles No. 1. She became the only singles qualifier to reach the semifinal and final of the US Open in the Open Era, and the youngest since Maria Sharapova in 2005. She was also the fifth player in the Open Era to make the semi-final on her US Open debut. Following Leylah Fernandez’s win in the semifinals, Raducanu became the second player born in 2002 to reach the final of the US Open. Raducanu reached the finals without dropping a set, winning 20 straight sets, and became the first British woman in 53 years to reach the US Open finals, as did Virginia Wade. Raducanu defeated Fernandez in what was the first all-teenage women’s singles final since the 1999 US Open between Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. Also taking the final in straight sets, she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam, and the first woman in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam with only two appearances (her only previous Grand Slam entry was Wimbledon 2021). This was her first WTA singles title and also her first Major at the same time and she is only the second player after Bianca Andreescu to win on her debut at the US Open. As a result, she is expected to rise to No. 23 in the world rankings.
